Fire and Smoke

Fire onboard an aircraft can have devastating effects at altitude. A fire can double in size within 15-120 seconds depending on the fuel that is burning and how much oxygen is present. Therefore, strong situational awareness around onboard fire safety and the confidence to aggressively tackle a fire effectively is time critical for the safety of the aircraft and its occupancies. Our EASA compliant fire and smoke course gives aircrew the knowledge and hands on practical skills to fight any fire onboard an aircraft.

Fire and Smoke Syllabus - Classroom Theory:
  • Prompt dealing with emergency involving fire and smoke
  • Importance of identifying the source of smoke or fire
  • Communication
  • Specific actions necessary for co-ordination and assistance in fire/smoke
  • Checking of fire risk areas, toilets and smoke detectors
  • Classifications of fire
  • Procedures for any fire scenario including use of extinguishers
  • Practical training in fire fighting
  • Practical training in the use of all fire fighting equipment:
    • Extinguishers – halon BCF, hafex, and water
    • Portable breathing equipment (PBE)*
    • Fire gloves
    • Fire containment bags
    • Fire Socks
    • Crash axe
    • Smoke goggles
    • EVAS
  • Ground based emergency services procedures/li>
Fire and Smoke Syllabus - Practical Fire Fighting
  • Extinguish a real life fire portraying an internal aircraft fire
  • Donning of PBEs in an enclosed smoke filled environment

*PBEs include: Air Liquide, Avox-Scott, B/E Aerospace, Essex, Oycrew
